Everything Has a Cost: You Only Get One Energy Bucket

We talk about “building capacity” like the ultimate goal is to eventually do everything. But you have one body, one nervous system, and one pool of energy each day. Everything draws from the same bucket.

A hard workout costs energy.

A long day at work costs energy.

Cooking dinner costs energy.

Maintaining a spotless house costs energy.

Going out with friends costs energy.

Even the things you love have a cost.

Recognizing a cost doesn't mean something isn't worth doing. A grueling session in the gym might be 100% worth the energy spent. So is an afternoon with friends, a great home-cooked meal, or doing absolutely nothing on the couch.

The trap is acting like we can infinitely add to our lives without affecting anything else. There isn't a separate energy bucket for work, one for training, one for relationships, and one for life admin.

It’s all one bucket.

I used to ask myself, “How can I fit everything in?” Now I try to ask, “What is actually worth spending my capacity on?”

Building capacity isn't about fitting more in - it's about getting better at deciding what deserves the energy you have.

What do you want to spend your energy bucket on this week?
